Sadly, a disaster, not coming back - Updated August 9
We have stayed at Poipu Kapili several times over the years. It has many things that have kept us coming back. But we checked in today for a week and it has been a miserable disaster. We got to our unit about 330 pm. It was probably 85-90 degrees in the living space with the sliding glass doors open. The bedrooms were even hotter. Our unit was advertised as having air conditioning in the bedrooms. So we closed the doors and turned the units on. The one in the master bedroom was not cooling the room and soon tripped the breaker. It kept tripping the breaker. By the late afternoon, it had to be well over 100 degrees in there. Of course, we called management. They said that they couldn’t do anything about the weather, we knew that there was no ac in the living rooms and we knew what we were getting. We asked for someone to come to our unit to see how miserably hot it was but they refused. Also, they would not send an electrician to fix the breaker (isn’t that a safety issue??) unless the property manager came out and guess what? The property manager wouldn’t come. It’s now evening. The sun is down and I expect it is still around 85 in here, warmer in the master bedroom. They told us that if we left this review, they would simply counter that the weather is warmer than normal and they can’t do anything about it. Does warm weather mean they can’t send an electrician out to fix a bad breaker? This unit is run down and what should work doesn’t. Cooler outside than in our bedroom. I honestly don’t know how we’re going to sleep tonight. Over 85 degrees. I am not exaggerating. Unit #43. Don’t ever stay here.
JP says
Aloha Sandi H, we are very sorry to hear that you will not be coming back. We never like to lose a loyal guest.
As a repeat guest to Poipu Kapili, you know there is no full AC in the units (as you stated). This week in particular was extremely warm due to the remnants of two hurricanes passing above us and below us causing high humidity and this was compounded by a lack of trades. We completely understand that it was hot in the unit as it was hot everywhere…even the beach was no refuge. You first called us, stated it was too hot, asked for more floor fans and then asked to move. We stated we did not have that ability just because it was warm and you then threatened “to blast us on social media”.
You then called the after-hours emergency phone stating the breaker was tripping and asked that we “come see how hot it is” and get an electrician that night. We stated we completely understand that it is hot, but we cannot get an electrician there at night. It was not that we refused. We then alerted you that it can be an issue with running the portable AC and a floor fan and another item at the same time in that room and to please refrain from doing so until we can get someone to look at it.
We did get an electrician there the next morning and had the breaker replaced, but noted that it will still be the same issue given the restraints on the breaker box and that you cannot have two fans and the AC on at the same time in that room (which the electrician did see in the bedroom). At no point was it a “safety issue”.
Our onsite manager did inform you that the penthouse unit does get the most sun all day and that may be why this unit was warmer than others in the past (in addition to the weather). At that point, we offered to move you to another unit but you chose to leave.
Again, we are very sorry to lose a repeat guest, but the weather/heat and access to full air conditioning at Poipu Kapili is out of our control I suggest for your next stay on Kauai you choose a property that offers full AC so this situation can be avoided, whether it is with us or another vacation rental manager. Aloha

Easy access from parking to rental, close to the beach, friendly and helpful staff.
Central air conditioning would be nice, but then again, the noise from the condensers would be disruptive. The room A/C was not very effective. Maybe a recirc type unit, like Mitsubishi.
Sarah B. says
Excellent location, floorplan, spacious lanai. elevator was down during nearly all of our stay; we were on the 3rd floor. 🙁 There was also a water main break on our departure day.
JP says
Mahalo Sarah for your 5-star review. We apologize for the inconvenience of the elevator being out. Please know the AOAO is replacing all the elevators later this year. We look forward to hosting you again.

It seems like you have a nice selection to choose from on your website and the booking process was easy. The woman who checked us in at the front desk was very nice. I don’t remember her name, just that she was originally from Connecticut. The apartment was very out dated. Bathrooms/showers need an upgrade. A/C in bedrooms not effective. We paid about the same per night for a beautiful home on the Big Island and #43 did not even come close. Sorry, just being honest. bathroom and kitchen cabient upgrade, upgrade to all the wood shutters, upgrade patio furniture. There was a note that the television was not working and would be fixed asap. We didn’t mind because we didn’t watch any television but it could have been an issue for a different guest. The pool was very nice and so were the views from the lanai but I would not return to #43 Poipu Kapili. I would consider another one of your properties.
JP says
Mahalo Rebecca for your review and comments. We appreciate your honesty and will pass these on to the owner. Note, we do rate this unit a “Deluxe”, defined as “Well-maintained properties updated within the past ten years” to set the right expectation. We are very sorry for any confusion. Also know we have replaced the TV. We are glad to hear you would consider another Parrish Kauai property and we will be sure to find the right one next time. We look forward to hosting you again soon.

I’ve stayed in other units of this property, and #43 was the best for both privacy space and common areas for relaxing with other family members.

Excellent
The view, the pool, and proximity to the beaches

Patty and Chris were great. The only issue we really had, and it’s nothing that property management could do anything about, was the bugs. There were so many biting insects both inside and outside that by the end of our stay my sisters and I were quite uncomfortable because we had so many bites! We couldn’t figure out how to switch the shower from a wand water distribution to a shower head… staff was prompt about helping us! The furniture in the living room and dining room chairs are getting quite worn.

Location, views , quietness & comfort. Have already reserved unit 43 for next fall.
Sandy: always good to see Sandy. She is the heart of Poipu Kapili. Chris & Patty are always helpful when needed, friendly & competent. The maintenance man was very helpful, too. Dishwasher repairman was good, too …. but the appliance really needs replacement. Stayed in unit #43 11/29-12/17. Beautiful unit. Loved it & have reserved it for next fall. Stayed in unit #34 11/5-11/29. Lovely view but unit needs a few things: dishwasher needs replacing; need portable ac unit in bedroom; & addition of washer/dryer would make unit more desirable. I think Parrish does an excellent job of managing Poipu Kapili. We have been staying at PK for over 20 years. Everything has run more smoothly since Parrish took over management.

Wonderful condo and amazing location
Unit is clean, well maintained and in great shape. View is incredible!!! Property is gorgeous!!! Nice selection of cooking utensils. Glad to see a good collection of beach items and guide books. Only note I would make is that the air conditioner in the master bedroom is too small to cool a room of it’s size. But the trade winds usually took care of that issue for us. That said, we would definitely stay here again!!!
John F. says
Too Hot
Brutally hot with inadequate air. Unit ok otherwise
JP says
Mahalo Jack for your feedback. We agree, here in the tropics it can get warm and this is especially so when the trades stop. Typically we are lucky and it is only for a day or two. However, we realize the importance of AC and are encouraging all owners to do what they can to to retrofit their properties to include AC. Please know that we do have other properties with central AC so on your next visit, we can certainly find you the perfect spot. We look forward to hosting you again soon. A hui hou.

Lovely property, clean, nice pool and grounds
Our room faced the sunset and got VERY warm in the evenings, even with the air running. It’s a large room and a second unit in that room would be a welcome addition. It as difficult to be in the condo at all in the afternoon with the sun beating in, even with the shades closed. Overall though, we had a wonderful stay.

Perfect
Unit was beautiful. Glad that the kitchen is getting updated.

We just returned last week from our trip to Kauai. Our stay at Piopu Kapili #43 couldn’t have been more pleasant. Check-in was super easy and ready to go through Parrish Collection. The pictures on the website truly look like they do in person. The condo is very well stocked with everything you need. Housekeeping does a great job at keeping it clean. It’s so nice of the owners of the condo to rent out their beautiful place. The grounds are perfectly manicured and groundskeepers were continuously keeping it that way. Even though the ocean is across the street you can still hear it which is so nice. The condo is conveniently located walking distance to the Sheraton so if you want to go have lunch or dinner or go sit on the beach (chairs and umbrellas were provided) it’s a three minute walk. We loved it all!
JP says
Mahalo Kim for your review. Glad your trip was all you wanted and we look forward to hosting you again next time. A hui hou!

Our relaxing experience.
Great location, peace and quite, on site facilities, no out of control children and at a reasonable price. I’m sorry I don’t remember her name, but the lady who ran the office was very professional, polite and extremely helpful. THANKS FOR A GREAT VACATION AND WE WILL SEE AGAIN!
Douglas B. says
Parrish (and before that, Grantham) has always provided us with the very best customer service in the islands – and that has not changed. However, the penthouse unit we rented on our family vacation failed to live up to it’s advertised “comfortable” environment. Despite a near-constant vigilance, the unit is far too warm. The tiny portable AC units in the bedrooms only work in the smaller bedroom – it does nothing for the master bedroom. We even drained and cleaned the AC ourselves, per the instructions. This (deluxe!) condo should not advertise AC. If at all possible, I’d retro-fit the unit with a state-of-the-art air conditioning system. If not a central unit, then a much-more powerful room units. The windows could/should be replaced with dual-pane low-e windows.
JP says
Mahalo Douglas for your review and comments. We will be sure to pass the need for AC on to the owner. We understand there are at times it is very much needed, for sure when the trades stop. We apologize for the inconvenience. We appreciate your loyalty and we look forward to hosting you again soon.

Top Notch!
Location, view of the ocean on the lanai from the property, swimming pool and it is close to the beach. Nice amenity was the Friday morning coffee, etc. We had issues with the master bath toilet when we arrived. But we were told by the person who checked us in. It took two days to fix. Then the chain broke on the toilet later during our stay and it was fixed within 24 hours. The rental property could use a little update: Master bath and patio furniture. (they were torn) Overall property is primo!

Clean, everything was thought of
Washer middle/center was found off of the center of washer. She promptly fixed it same day. Also at end of our stay, informed them that oven door did not completely close.
